Mokoro Trips

No children under the age of 12 Years old allowed on Mokoro excursions!

Mokoro trips are booked through the Jakotsha Community Trust, and we book for you.
Experience the heart of the Okavango in a mokoro, gliding through crystal clear water, inundated with birds and water lilies. Whether you are doing a day trip or camping out on one of the many uninhabited islands found in the flood plains, this is an experience not to be missed. The traditional dugout canoe, locally known as a mokoro, was the mode of transport chosen by the Okavango’s first inhabitants, the Bayei and Banoka people.
Guests must be sure to have enough water, sunscreen and hats before embarking on the motorboat that takes them to the mokoro station.
From camp it will be a 20-minute boat ride through a narrow meandering channel to our mokoro station. From here you will get onto a fiber-glass mokoro which can seat 2 people. The Head Poler will then give the group a detailed speech on safety and what to expect on the trip. If you are taking camera’s you must be sure to keep them in a plastic bag.

Mokoro Day Trip

07h30 until 15h00 (subject to change)

You will be poled through the tranquil channels that link the extensive flood plain system to the main river for about 3-4 hours, followed by a guided walk on an island.  You can either take your own lunch or take pre-ordered lunch packs from us and enjoy a peaceful lunch break. You are likely to see lots of birdlife, hopefully some antelopes and if very lucky, some Elephants. You will then make your way back to camp to enjoy a nice relaxing afternoon.

2 Day Mokoro Package

Self-catering only. No Meals will be served on the Island.
(1st night camping at Guma campsite and 2nd night camping on the Mokoro Island.)

Similar to the tranquil mokoro day trip; You will be poled through the channels that link the extensive flood plain system to the main river. The polers will take you through the floodplains for +-2 hours and stop on one of the islands for you to set up camp. In the afternoon the polers will take you by mokoro to a larger island where you can do a guided bush walk by the Head Poler.
You can ask the Head Poler for firewood if you wish to have a fire at night. You can also ask the polers to fetch water for washing up after dinner and in the morning after breakfast. The Head Poler will bury the ash from the fire the following day before you leave the island. Guma is not in a Game Area but there is a chance of seeing large herds of red letchwe, sitatunga, warthogs, elephants and many water birds.
After camping on the Mokoro Island the group will pack up camp and head slowly back to the Mokoro station where our motorboats will be waiting to take you back to camp.

Extra: Extra mokoro’s will be booked to transport you luggage and will be charged at the daily rate.
i.e. if doing a 3 day mokoro package the luggage mokoro will be charged by 3 days. There is nothing out on the mokoro island which you would be camping on, so you would need to take along all your camping equipment i.e. tents, mattresses, s/bags, pillows, table, chairs, braai grid, basin, lamps, shovel, cutlery, crockery, food, drinks, portable shower (if you have one) etc. A small gas cooker would also be handy if you have one.

Bird Trips

The Okavango Delta is a treasure trove of unique and varied bird species for seasoned twitchers and casual birders alike. Birdlife includes the iconic; such as the Fish Eagle and Malachite King Fisher, as well as the rare; like the ever-elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl. Birding is possible from anywhere in the camp as well as out on the water if one hires a boat or does a mokoro trip. The Camp also has a trail through the surrounding forest and woodland which can be explored for one’s birding pleasure. It is also possible to do a guided walk along this trail. Please enquire at reception.
