Where We Started
Discover the essence of Guma Lagoon Camp, where the spirit of adventure meets unparalleled hospitality in the heart of the Okavango Delta.
Founded in 2000 by Guy and Beverly Lobjoit, Guma began as a vision to revolutionize local fish farming, yet quickly transformed into a beacon of African safari charm.
Originally conceived as a horse safari camp and stables by PJ and Barney Bestelink (founders of Horse Safaris in the Okavango), Guma found its stride under the guidance of Guy and Bev. With a passion for sustainable practices, Guy introduced innovative fish farming techniques against the backdrop of pristine natural beauty, however, as the demand for fresh water fish evolved, so too did Guma’s destiny.
Transitioning seamlessly into hospitality, Guma Lagoon Camp blossomed into a haven where rustic simplicity meets breathtaking landscapes. Picture three dome tents nestled under the stars, their open-air ablutions and a self-help bar illuminated by candlelight, embodying the raw, untamed spirit of the African bush. Here, evenings were lit not by electricity, but by the warm glow of shared stories and the flicker of torches.
Fueled by the warmth of their growing circle of guests, Guma expanded organically. What started with humble beginnings soon gained momentum through word of mouth, attracting repeat visitors who arrived with ever-larger groups in tow. PJ then sold his shares in the company to Steve and Heidi Huebsch along with Managers Marc and Taryn. Kate Bostelman too added an extra in Horse Trails for a few years and then moved on to build her new company alongside her husband in Maun. This organic growth spurred the addition of new tents and facilities, each step forward guided by a commitment to preserving the camp’s intimate charm amidst its flourishing popularity.
As Guma’s reputation spread, so did its reach. International acclaim beckoned through partnerships with leading travel companies, drawing a diverse tapestry of guests eager to explore the Okavango Delta’s tranquil waters via mokoro excursions. This pivotal moment not only marked the camp’s evolution but also underscored its enduring appeal as a destination where nature, hospitality, and community converge.
Today, Guma Lagoon Camp stands as a testament to the vision of its founders and the enduring legacy of family stewardship. Rooted in a deep respect for the land and its inhabitants, Guma invites you to experience a rare blend of adventure and comfort, where every visit is not just a journey but a chapter in an ongoing tale of passion and discovery. Welcome to Guma, where every moment is as unique as the wilderness that surrounds it.
